Perth’s weather today is clear and warm, with the live forecast above showing a typical summer day. This pattern is common from December to February, when dry easterly winds and high pressure dominate the region.
What drives Perth’s summer weather?
Perth sits on the Swan Coastal Plain, sheltered by the Darling Scarp. In summer, a persistent high-pressure system over the Great Australian Bight blocks rain and pulls in hot easterly winds from the inland desert. Afternoon sea breezes, known locally as the “Fremantle Doctor,” often drop temperatures by 8–12 degrees Celsius by late afternoon. This daily cycle is reliable from November through March.
How does winter compare?
Winter (June to August) brings the opposite. Cold fronts from the Southern Ocean sweep across the southwest, delivering most of Perth’s annual rainfall. Average maximums sit around 18–19°C, with frequent overcast skies and gusty westerly winds. Hail and thunderstorms are possible but rarely severe.
Does Perth get cyclones or severe storms?
Cyclones rarely reach Perth, but ex-tropical systems can bring heavy rain and flooding in autumn. Severe thunderstorms occur a few times a year, mainly in spring and autumn, with damaging wind gusts possible.
When is the best time to visit Perth?
March and April offer the best balance: warm days (25–30°C), low humidity, and fewer crowds. The sea is still warm from summer, and the chance of rain is low.
Why does Perth feel hotter than the temperature?
The dry easterly winds in summer create a low humidity environment. Without moisture in the air, sweat evaporates quickly, but direct sun and wind can make the “feels-like” temperature 2–4°C higher than the reading.
